Not Starting Your Podcast Right Now
Starting a podcast can be a daunting feat, especially if you’ve never done one before. There are a few things to consider such as the nature of your podcast, the setup, the team, and the publishing. These are all things that can be refined as you continue to create and publish your podcast.
It’s common for people to feel anxiety surrounding creating a podcast. Maybe they don’t like the sound of their voice, they might feel nervous or they may simply be overwhelmed with the task of creating content for episodes.
The longer you wait to start your podcast, your competitors may already beat you to it.
With the recent Spotify purchase of podcasting app, Anchor, there is no time like the present to jump right in.
Failure to Plan is Plan to Fail
Do your research - find out what it is your audience wants to hear about and then go about creating a podcast schedule that sets out the topic for each episode.
For the episode itself, it doesn’t need to be scripted, but it can simply be a dot point list of topics to touch on during the episode. This will ensure you’re on track, especially if you’re looking to keep to a time limit.
Also, be aware of what your competitors in your niche are publishing. It’s likely that your listeners are subscribing to similar podcasts to yours, and it may look a little strange if you’re all publishing episodes with similar topics.
Not Distributing Tasks Amongst the Team
Creating a podcast for your brand is easier If you’re working with a team, and it’s even easier if you’re all working together.
Some of the tasks for creating a podcast are:
- Planning episodes
- Scheduling recording and publishing
- Writing content
- Recording and editing audio
- Creating content for social media
Share the workload with your team by creating a schedule and distributing tasks and don’t forget to have regular meetings to review data and refine the process.
Podfading (Podcasting Inconsistently)
Podcasting can be a lot of work and it’s easy to let things fall by the wayside meaning that you fail to publish podcasts to your schedule. The thing is, your listeners get used to your schedule so when you don’t publish for a while or are inconsistent with podcasting, it sends the message that you’re no longer active and your audience leaves in droves.
There are many advantages to publishing podcasts consistently:
- You can steadily build an audience base
- You find ways to improve planning and workflow
- You’ll be able to build a consistent bank of data to help you review and make changes to your content to help you build your audience base
- It’ll be a much harder habit to break if you’re podcasting consistently
